IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) are primarily used in the Power Conversion System (PCS) within the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). IGBTs play a critical role in enabling efficient, bidirectional energy conversion, transforming direct current (DC) from batteries into Alternating Current (AC) for grid use and vice versa.

Common Failure Scenarios Requiring Testing

Capacitor Failure
Capacitors expand due to age or electrical stress, pushing against buswork and causing short circuits
Buswork Shorting
Deformed copper bars contact grounded surfaces, creating dead shorts at 1400V DC
Cascading System Faults
Single component failures can blow all switchgear fuses simultaneously
Dead Shorts
Catastrophic failures at 1400V DC damage multiple components

Quick, accurate troubleshooting restores system operation safely and minimizes downtime.

Course Objectives
  • Follow proper safety procedures before IGBT testing
  • Perform visual inspections to identify failed components
  • Test IGBT modules in-system and on the bench
  • Test individual IGBT components and associated parts
  • Interpret test results to determine component status
