Final Assessment

Every year, workers are killed or seriously injured by equipment that starts up unexpectedly or releases stored energy during maintenance.

Lockout/tagout (LOTO) is the proven set of procedures that prevents those incidents by ensuring all energy sources are isolated and controlled before work begins.

This course covers both universal LOTO best practices and the procedures specific to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). BESS equipment presents hazards that go beyond traditional electrical work: high-voltage DC systems, stored electrochemical energy, and the risk of thermal runaway.

Knowledge checks appear throughout the course. You must complete all knowledge checks and achieve 80% or higher on the final assessment to receive your certificate.

What You’ll Learn
  • Identify LOTO roles, responsibilities, and required documentation
  • Execute the standard LOTO procedure, including changing and releasing a lockout
  • Recognize stranded energy hazards unique to battery systems and apply the 8-step verification procedure
  • Lock out battery racks, inverters, and balance of plant equipment and identify the limits of your LOTO authority at the substation boundary
  • Handle special situations including working alone, group lockout, shift changes, and emergency lock removal
  • Respond correctly to thermal runaway, electrical shock, arc flash, and other on-site emergencies

Completing this course does not by itself authorize you to perform LOTO on BESS equipment. Always follow your organization’s authorization process. If you’re ever uncertain about your role or the task in front of you, stop and ask your supervisor before proceeding.
