Visual Inspection Procedures for ESS Equipment – Course Introduction
Disclaimer

This platform is for educational purposes only. It does not qualify or authorize users to work on battery energy storage systems. BESS equipment presents serious hazards and must only be serviced by properly trained, qualified, and authorized personnel in accordance with applicable codes, standards, OEM requirements, and site procedures.

Course Overview

This training covers visual inspections of Energy Storage System (ESS) equipment.

A visual inspection is a general check that you should do while on-site to make sure that everything is operating properly. It is not meant to serve as or replace routine maintenance needed per manufacturer’s instructions or your company’s inspection and maintenance protocols.

It is not expected that you will conduct a visual check of the entire site each time you visit, but periodic maintenance checks on sub-systems and components can help you identify potential issues related to performance, physical condition, and safety. This prevents lost time and revenue from equipment failure.

In this course, you will be able to download checklists for the visual inspection of different sub-systems and components.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify equipment requiring visual inspection
  • Recognize common issues that indicate equipment problems

Critical Safety Requirements

Before beginning any inspection or maintenance activity, you must adhere to the following safety protocols:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Only qualified electrical personnel should perform these inspections. Proper PPE is required, including arc flash rated clothing appropriate for the equipment being inspected. While on-site, if you observe signs of arc flash, thermal events, smoke, unusual odors, or other hazardous conditions, immediately follow your organization’s safety protocols.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

Always de-energize and lock out/tag out transformers and other equipment before opening enclosures and/or performing maintenance. Verify absence of voltage before proceeding with work.

Scope of Work

Follow your established protocols for maintenance and repair. If a repair or replacement is not within your scope of responsibility, properly document all findings and escalate to the appropriate personnel. Never attempt work outside your authorized scope or training.

Important Notice

This training is intended as a general guide. The checklist is not a comprehensive list of all items requiring visual inspection.

For equipment-specific procedures, detailed maintenance requirements, and site-specific protocols, always refer to:

  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and documentation
  • Your company’s standard operating procedures
  • Site-specific inspection and maintenance protocols
